Trauma-Focused CBT: How it Methodically Addresses Trauma 7 Min
Dr. Judy kicks off our first session with a deep-dive on the basics of trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). She discusses who it’s for, how it’s different than classic cognitive behavioral therapy, and how it methodically addresses trauma.
Phase 1: Psychoeducation, Parenting, Relaxation, & Emotion Regulation 15 Min
In this session, Dr. Judy breaks down the first phases of trauma-focused CBT. She shares how long a trauma-focused CBT regimen can last, how parenting and psychoeducation impact treatment, and the significant roles “relaxation” and “affective modulation” (i.e. “emotion regulation”) play in this therapy’s effectiveness.
Phase 2: Cognitive Coping, Trauma Narrative, & In Vivo Gradual Exposure 22 Min
Dr. Judy walks through the “C,” “T,” and “I” of the PRACTICE acronyms in this session. She breaks down what cognitive coping has to do with transforming thoughts to be helpful instead of hurtful; she shares how this form of CBT addresses the root of trauma through the “trauma narrative”; and she explains how “in vivo gradual exposure” improves the patient’s resilience both day-to-day and in the long-term.
Phase 3: Conjoint Parent-Child Sessions & Enhancing Safety/Future Development 12 Min
Dr. Judy explains how parents can collaborate with the therapist and with their child during the “conjoint parent-child sessions” phase of the PRACTICE method. She also walks through what actionable steps to take to enhance the survivor’s future safety, and foster their future development, once the TF-CBT regimen ends.
How to Find Trauma-Focused CBT (& the Right Therapist) 13 Min
In our final session, Dr. Judy walks through how to find the best provider for trauma-focused CBT. She shares which organizations can help you find a TF-CBT certified therapist, and what specific questions to ask a potential therapist once you find one, in order to determine they’re the right professional for you.

However, with the right, most effective treatment, there is real hope for recovery.
As a neuropsychologist, Dr. Judy Ho understands the way trauma can majorly impact the brain, memories, and cognitive functioning. In this series, she walks through a life-changing type of cognitive-behavioral therapy that can improve the functioning—and the life—of trauma survivors.
This treatment is called trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT).
Not only does trauma-focused CBT address the major mental health obstacles in the patient’s life; it tackles the root of the trauma itself. This series shows you how.
