About the Series

Over half of the population experiences a significant traumatic event in their life, and 1 in 10 of those people go on to develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Unfortunately, most people don’t seek professional interventions for these issues due to the shame and stigma surrounding mental health. On top of that, directly coping with trauma in therapy is a scary thought for many survivors, which further deters them from seeking treatment.

Somatic Experiencing (SE) therapy is a groundbreaking type of therapy that allows survivors to work through their trauma in a more digestible, gradual way. This body-focused therapy helps patients manage and overcome trauma through a focus on nervous system functions and physiological symptoms.

As a triple board-certified neuropsychologist, Dr. Judy Ho understands the impact of trauma on memory, and its relationship with our “fight or flight” response. In this series, she sheds light on how SE therapy uniquely maneuvers these functions of the human body to lead to better mental health outcomes.

She even walks through what a SE therapy session looks like, from start to finish.

Effective trauma treatment looks different for everyone. This cutting-edge approach to trauma may be one you or someone you love can add to your treatment toolbox.

"This series is what I was looking for when I first joined MedCircle. I love learning about all the possible treatment options out there and somatic experiencing is one of the most fascinating and I believe to be one of the most effective."

In this series, you’ll discover:

  • The surprising relationship between past trauma, memory, the nervous system, and the ability to self-regulate–and why this relationship is so important to understand
  • How past trauma can affect you on a physiological level–without even realizing it
  • Why physically processing trauma can be so effective, even if the sufferer never talks about the trauma directly
  • Tactical ways to replace negative coping mechanisms for trauma (like substance abuse and overeating) with helpful strategies such as “grounding,” “pendulating,” and building distress tolerance
  • The exact benefits a patient will see and feel after SE therapy, and how long it takes to experience those benefits

“In my own practice, I’ve used somatic experiencing techniques…[and] people love it because it’s tangible, and trauma can feel so intangible...trauma is a big dark cloud above your head, but somatic experiencing allows that person to have tangible contact with that information, but in a less threatening way.”
