About the Series

Perhaps the most stigmatized area of mental health is mental hospitalization. In fact, according to a review of more than 20 studies detailed in the journal BMC Psychiatry, “stigma” and “embarrassment” were the most common reasons why young patients with mental illness did not follow through with treatment. This problem permeates the mental health world: 54% of adults with a mental illness receive no treatment at all, and 70-80% of children have unmet mental health needs.

Destigmatization starts with education. In this series, Triple Board certified neuropsychologist Dr. Judy Ho walks through different treatment settings and levels of care. From psychiatric hospitals to residential inpatient care to various outpatient programs, you’ll learn what services each type offers and when each level of care is warranted. You’ll also understand how to find a credible and trustworthy treatment program, and the costs associated with undergoing treatment.

Research indicates that the majority of people who undergo either inpatient or outpatient mental health care return to functional and hope-filled lives. A structured treatment program provides a path toward recovery; this series sheds light on which of those paths is right for you or your loved one.
