What role does “suggestibility” play in hypnotherapy?

While some people are more prone to suggestibility than others, Smith says that trait of suggestibility is only a part of what should be considered when considering hypnotherapy. Smith suggests reviewing the level of your desire for change.

If you don’t want the result, you’re not going to get the result. If there is a scale from 0-10, with 10 being a desperate desire for results and 0 is no desire for results, hypnotherapy becomes effective at 7 or a higher.”

Is Acceptance & Commitment Therapy Right For You?

Acceptance & commitment therapy (ACT) is an evidence-based treatment that has helped many overcome their struggles with mental health. However, Dr. Ramani reminds us that overnight results and perfect outcomes should not be expected. Patients need to have the desire for change and be willing to put in the work. While therapy can be life-changing – no question – setting realistic expectations is key to the success of the process.

Don’t Pathologize The Life Experience

Clinical psychologist, Dr. Ramani Durvasula explains that ACT can be very beneficial in treating nearly every mental health disorder. One of the best qualities of ACT is that it is less likely to pathologize the life experience. Meaning, while some treatments, indirectly or otherwise, correlate feelings like stress and being uncomfortable with a “problem” or a “disease”, ACT is quick to remind you that some suffering is an expected, typical part of the human experience.

Of course, accepting reality is not meant to diminish the very real struggles people face. Rather the purpose is to find meaning in struggle, finding purpose in the imperfections and discover the truth of your power and resilience.
